That special something

Since the beginning of the year when I started to put more thought into my wardrobe and how and where I buy clothes, I've started thinking more about having special, unique items in my wardrobe. Once you get away from the high of impulse-shopping you start to see how wonderful it is to have a one-in-a-million garment or piece of jewelery you can hold on to for longer than a few months.

I used to love thrift shopping, going on a hunt for a gloriously amazing dress or skirt or boots that was worn in juuust right and didn't look a thing like any of the outfits I saw people wearing on a daily basis. I have made some amazing finds in thrift stores; from a oversize leopard print blazer to a beautiful printed floral & clocks sundress and much more. I still love thrift shopping, but somehow online shopping and fast-fashion has taken over my life over the past few years. Now, I'm definitely not a person who would only dress in clothing from thrift stores- but I think the best fashion comes when you mix it up, wearing new and old, stuff from the mall and Value Village and Ebay, wearing a garment or two that has a story behind it.
There's something kind of depressing about looking through your wardrobe and only seeing polyester-elastane duds that are so spot-on trendy. Give me some weird clothing, something you can't find in the stores right now, a vintage statement ring, a woven leather belt... let's tell a story with our clothes.

Mid-March Update

Well, its only 2 weeks until I finish my 2-year program at school and I am ITCHING to dive into my closet and really sort things out. I'm pondering doing a gigantic closet inventory- at first I thought I would do a spring/summer clothing inventory, but since some items crossover between many seasons it would make more sense to do an inventory of my entire closet. This scares me because a) I have a lot of stuff and b) I don't really want to know how much stuff I have.

The main part of my wardrobe that I wear on a regular basis is center stage in my closet, and over the past few months I've been peering into the back corners at the things I haven't seen in ages. These are the things I want to wear 'someday' but never get around to wearing, yet I don't want to face the facts and get rid of them. A big closet inventory could be just the thing I need to cut my wardrobe down a bit.

The good news is that over the past month or so items from my wardrobe have been making their way into my 'to sell', 'to swap' and 'to donate' piles. Next month I plan on listing a bunch of stuff on Ebay and I'm also planning to host a clothing swap with a friend. Looking forward to it!

Faves of Fashion Week(s)

I always love checking out the runway fashions of Paris, New York, Milan and London each season be inspired and check out the new up-and-coming trends. I've been super busy with school but I managed to pick a few favorites out of the hundreds of runway shows of the Fall/Winter 2014 season. What were your faves?

Inspiration: Passions For Fashion

Christina from Passions For Fashion is fast becoming one of my favorite style bloggers. She is able to mix and match different pieces of clothing to come up with so many new outfits, yet still carrying her sense of style through all of them. I also love the way she's able to add a little edge to a chic outfit. 'Back in the day' I was all about being ~edgy and wanting to stand out. As I'm now in my mid-twenties, nowadays I'm looking for outfits that are professional yet still show my sense of style- and she is totally my role model in that! And after reading her blog she also sounds like a great person!

February Purchases

My February purchases list is going to be shorter than January's since I have been SO BUSY I didn't really have any time to actually go shopping, either at the mall or online!  I swear lately I am always jammed in between one commitment and the next- can't wait until this semester is over! Okay so the Forever 21 stuff isn't completely 'practical'... but I gotta have fun sometime, don't I?

  • Joe Fresh pink cowl neck sweater - I have one in grey & I love it and wanted the pink one, so when I saw it for $10 it was a steal
  • H&M silver chain link necklace, black/gold heart necklace - I LOVE the chain link necklace, it really pops and I don't have any other pieces like it (mine is silver, not gold like the picture). The heart necklace is a good dainty necklace for during the summer
  • FOREVER21 - I used a gift card so it didn't cost me anything!
    • blue leopard bodysuit - this was a 'just for fun' purchase, not sure if I'll regret it or not. With my love of leopard, how could I resist?
    • paris crop top, pink crop top - The Paris & pink crop tops are to wear under floaty tank tops in the spring & summer
  • JOE FRESH pink jeans - I recently realized my pink jeans (seen in the last post) were too big for me as I've lost a bit of weight over the past few years. These new jeans are their replacement!

I definitely noticed a drop in the urge to impulse purchase over the past month, mostly because of my busyness- but when I went in to Superstore to grab groceries I bought the pink jeans (and on another day, the cowl neck sweater) telling myself I wanted/needed them; and in those moments I really did feel COMPELLED to purchase them no matter what. I know i will get wear out of them so I think it will be okay. I think my plan for the month of March is to make as few purchases as possible; and coming up in April or May I will do a closet inventory to end off winter and start of my Spring/Summer wardrobe. I know already that I want some more summer dresses (which can possibly be procured with a few trips to some thrift stores) and maybe some tops; but first I must inventory to see what I have, and what I really need first!
